My Top 5 Study Spots for Furman Students

Last updated October 21, 2024

By Ashlyn King Student

Hey Y’all! My name is Ashlyn King, and I am a freshman here at Furman University. As a first year student, I found myself lost when trying to decide what the best environment for me to study, or as students now call it, “lock in” would be. I have since experimented with different locations that best suit various students, and would like to share my top five with you all.

The Haynsworth Room

The Haynsworth Room, often referred to as “The Harry Potter Room” is a peaceful space with old-fashioned charm located on the far right side of James B. Duke Library. This charm creates a comforting, fairy tale-like space for students to work in. The Haynsworth room is a smaller area which means you will often find other students hard at work here. This gives you a great opportunity to make a new friend while still enjoying a quiet space to study and get work done

Furman Hall Study Area

This study area located in Furman Hall is a great spot for students who prefer to have their own space with low foot traffic, while not feeling trapped. This room is on the bottom floor of Furman Hall, facing the main entrance to Furman University. The cozy chairs, couch, and stools face windows which create a very open and comforting feel. Plus, the natural light always keeps me happy, and motivated.

The Library Steps

The library steps are the perfect place for a midday study/homework session any time, but especially when the weather is beautiful. However, if you are looking to accomplish many tasks, you may want to look elsewhere. The library steps are a popular place for students to go, meaning you are almost guaranteed to see your friends. If you are like me, you will likely talk to them, before mysteriously finding yourself in line for coffee at The Library Cafe. That said, the steps are my favorite spot when I have lighter work and need a good mental break.

The Library Study Rooms

The library study rooms are spaces located all through the library and are a place where you can design your study session however you would like. You can be as quiet or chatty as you want, and each room fits a sizable group of people. These rooms are available to be reserved and provide a great space for collaborative projects, test preparation, and group study sessions. I personally love to use these study rooms when I need to focus, but still want to be around friends.

The Amphitheater

Lastly, if you prefer to be in touch with mother nature while working, then the amphitheater is the perfect place for you. The amphitheater is located behind the eco lodges, past the belltower. Although I haven’t tried this area yet, I’ve heard it’s a very peaceful study spot, and I look forward to checking it out myself. You can even set up a hammock for ultimate outdoor comfort!

Happy Studying! 🙂
