Furman’s Intentional Roommate Pairing

Introduction

Hi y’all! My name is Ella Boone, and I’m a Junior majoring in Psychology and English from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Today, I am going to talk about the roommate process here at Furman, from South Housing your first year to the North Village apartments.

Intentionally Paired With Roomates

In your first year at Furman, you will be living in the newly renovated South Housing! You will likely be in one of the most common types of dorm rooms we offer, a double. This means you and one other person will share a room with community-style bathrooms located down the hall.

Something unique about your first year is that, rather than picking a roommate, you are intentionally paired with one. While this may seem daunting, Furman has an excellent system in place designed to maximize compatibility. You will fill out a survey asking you questions like “What temperature do you like the room?” and “What time do you go to bed?” Then the Furman system will find the ideal match for your new roommate!

My first-year roommate and I may have seemed like an unlikely pairing since she was from Korea and played rugby while I was from Louisiana and did theater, but we got along like two peas in a pod!

Purposely Picking

Following your first year, students are allowed to start choosing their roommates. Often, students choose to continue to live with their roommate from South Housing since they got along so well! In the Clark Murphy Complex, your sophomore year, instead of community-style bathrooms, you are more likely to have a suite style. This means your dorm room will share a bathroom with another connected room.

My sophomore roommate and I were extremely close, but since we were smart about setting expectations, we never got tired of each other. We were both supportive of each other and always made sure we got a balance of roommate and alone time. We gave each other the tightest hugs as we moved out since she will be studying in New Zealand next semester!

Moving to North Village

Most students move into North Village apartments during their Junior and Senior year. This means you will get your own bedroom but will share the apartment with three other roommates. The apartment comes with a kitchen, a living room, and a sunroom open for all occupants to share. Great for watching movies and cooking meals in your apartment!

Meet my Current Roommates!

This upcoming year, I am grateful to get to live with three of my best friends here on campus in the newly renovated C apartment in North Village. We all come from a variety of cities with a variety of majors, but we were first connected in our freshman year through our love of theater! We are all a part of the Furman Pauper Players Musical Theatre Club, and we met when we were all cast in Tuck Everlasting. Since then, we have been inseparable!

We are constantly supporting one another at our performances and always making time to go to the Peace Center in downtown Greenville to see a show. We all have our designated dinner days where we cook for everyone, followed by sitting on the couch, eating ice cream, and watching Love Island or Dance Moms. I truly feel lucky that I have had such amazing roommates these past couple of semesters, but I know this is not a rare occurrence for most Furman students.

Furman does an excellent job of setting up its students to know how to find their perfect pair!
