The men and women of the Furman University Police Department are committed to preventing violence on campus.\u00a0 Campus police train regularly, and follow comprehensive threat assessment and management protocols.<\/p>\n

We also work hard to prepare our community for the possibility of violence on campus.\u00a0 Active Shooter Training is provided to incoming freshmen during fall orientation, and other classes are open to students throughout the year.\u00a0 Students, faculty, and staff may also request Active Shooter Training at any time, including customized classes for groups and departments.<\/p>\n

Active Shooter Training provided follows best practices and recommendations from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.\u00a0 It is intended to provide response options in the event of an active shooter on campus.\u00a0 To request training, contact Chief John Milby by phone at 864.294.2111, or by email at john.milby@furman.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

RUN, HIDE, FIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. \u200bRUN:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Evacuating the affected area is always the first, best option during an attack.\u00a0 Have a plan for escape in mind.\u00a0 Think outside the box – break windows and walls if necessary to get away.\u00a0 Call 911 or campus police at\u00a0864.294.2111<\/strong>.\u00a0 Warn those around you as you evacuate.<\/li>\n
  2. HIDE:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>If escape is not an option, hide in an area out of the attacker’s view.\u00a0 Lock, and if possible, barricade doors.\u00a0 Notify campus police and call\u00a0911.\u00a0 Consider using the LiveSafe app if you must remain silent.<\/li>\n
  3. FIGHT:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>As a last resort, do whatever it takes to save your life and the lives of others.\u00a0 Fight back as a group.\u00a0 Consider using improvised weapons, such as a fire extinguisher, belt, or other object.\u00a0 Look for opportunities to go on the offensive, such as when the shooter is reloading or distracted.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Remember, police are on the way.\u00a0 Do whatever you can to get away or slow the attacker until police arrive.\u00a0 You can survive!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
