It will be adjacent to a brick and grassy area interspersed with short walls to provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2019\/11\/20\/joseph-vaughn-statue-planning-underway-furman-hall-lettering-being-replaced\/\">a place of reflection and celebration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-238 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/joseph-vaughn-day\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/210\/2021\/03\/JosephVaughn.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"424\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 552px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 552\/424;\" \/><br \/>\nIn the photo, he is walking up the steps to James B. Duke Library, wearing a cardigan and with books tucked under his arm.<\/p>\n<p>The statue is among a set of recommendations from Furman\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/about\/task-force-on-slavery-and-justice\/\">Task Force on Slavery and Justice<\/a>, formed in the spring of 2017 to acknowledge Furman\u2019s ties to slavery and to honor and recognize on campus important figures in the university\u2019s diverse history.<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore-based landscape architectural firm, Mahan Rykiel, helped a university working group decide on the most prominent location on campus, and designed short walls for seating and space to acknowledge other individuals who have contributed to the university\u2019s history.
