At Furman, we’re committed to leading our community—and our peers—in a more sustainable direction. To accomplish that, we have joined other universities and colleges in an effort to promote sustainable practices.
Sustainability Tracking Assessment Ratings System
Furman is a charter participant of the Sustainability Tracking Assessment Ratings System. STARS is a voluntary self-reporting system that helps schools report their achievements in four areas: operations, academics, engagement, and planning, administration. This year Furman was awarded a gold rating, the highest available STARS rating. Only 94 institutions have reported under the latest, most stringent version of STARS and of those, 38 achieved a gold rating. The publicly available report includes details of Furman’s progress across all areas, ranging from the percentage of courses that integrate sustainability, to recycling rates, to relevant opportunities for student residents.
President’s Climate Commitment
Former President David E. Shi was a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment in 2007. This pledge provides a framework and support for higher education institutions to eliminate greenhouse gases on campuses throughout the United States. By joining more than 670 college presidents, Furman is committed to becoming carbon neutral.
