Andy Teye already has <span class=\"s2\">documented<\/span> the laborers who helped build the downtown Greenville campus. And of course, we name this entire project for <span class=\"s2\">Abraham<\/span>, the former slave of James C. Furman we hope to memorialize. The efforts of 2015 to commemorate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/commemorating-desegregation\/road-to-desegregation\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Joseph Vaughn<\/span><\/a> and all the students who desegregated various parts of Furman was a hallmark achievement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But perhaps the clearest example of a great figure in Furman&#8217;s early history is a man known to us only as &#8220;Murphy.&#8221; Caretaker of the Greenville Female College (which officially merged with Furman in 1938 but had been under shared leadership since James C. Furman&#8217;s time), Murphy was a trusted do-it-all man on campus. As one student memorialized in poetry,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;They are gone now&#8211;And Old Murphy has,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">at last, laid down to rest<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">From his years of local service,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Giving G.F.C his best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Who was Murphy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you ask it? Just a plain old Negro man,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Janitor and humble servant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Always loyal, always true, <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Never asking much, but giving<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Years of service, Gold and Blue.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">(from &#8220;Vision of the 80s,&#8221; by Gertrude Hoy Fripp)<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article was written by Brandon Inabinet and originally published on February 26, 2018.
