It was founded by longtime politics professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/riley\/our-history\/#Gordon\">Dr. Don Gordon<\/a>, who &#8220;wanted to bring the world to Furman.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course, The Riley Institute would not have become what it is today without having followed the guidance and example of its namesake, former South Carolina Governor and former United States Secretary of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/riley\/our-history\/#Riley\">Richard W. Riley<\/a> &#8217;54. <span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Our work reflects Secretary Riley\u2019s unwavering commitment to equity and his belief that public education, an informed citizenry, and a diverse and well-prepared leadership body are key drivers of social and economic mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to being shaped by Don Gordon&#8217;s vision and Secretary Riley&#8217;s ethos, the institute has also been influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/riley\/our-history\/#Fellows\">key people<\/a> along the way. These individuals are recognized as our senior distinguished fellows.
