{"id":100,"date":"2019-11-22T01:48:49","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T01:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/osher-lifelong-learning-institute\/?page_id=100"},"modified":"2026-03-18T14:47:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T14:47:31","slug":"overview","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/osher-lifelong-learning-institute\/senior-leaders-greenville\/overview\/","title":{"rendered":"Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Mission<\/h3>\n<p>Senior Leaders Greenville builds awareness of the essential role of seniors in the community and the critical issues they face, empowering participants to become active players seeking better lives for seniors in Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond.<\/p>\n<h3>Vision<\/h3>\n<p>The collective wisdom and experience of Senior Leaders Greenville participants will be a powerful voice of advocacy for seniors, resulting in better choices for aging well, to the benefit of all seniors and the greater community.<\/p>\n<h3>Program Overview<\/h3>\n<p>The program will run from August through May.\u00a0During nine day-long sessions, in a variety of locations around the Greenville County, senior adult participants will meet with community leaders, activists and politicians to gain a broad view and in-depth look at Greenville&#8217;s history, people and institutions.\u00a0 Particular attention will be paid to how they affect, and are affected by, the growing senior population.<\/p>\n<p>Though tours, speakers, group activities, simulations and exercises, participants will be exposed to a broad view of our community and then immersed in the details of subjects that are particularly relevant to the older population.\u00a0 As participants see the varying opportunities and challenges that the senior population is faced with, they will be encouraged to bring their unique talents, wisdom and skills to advocacy, collaborations, solutions and implementation of ideas that will benefit our senior population.<\/p>\n<p>Guided by the long-term State&#8217;s Plan on Aging, participants will address a different topic each session. \u00a0Proposed\u00a0topics include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Orientation<\/li>\n<li>History<\/li>\n<li>Physical\/Psychological Impacts of Aging<\/li>\n<li>Transportation<\/li>\n<li>Housing<\/li>\n<li>Social Services<\/li>\n<li>Government<\/li>\n<li>Medical<\/li>\n<li>Legal and Financial Issues<\/li>\n<li>What do I do now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Application Guidelines<\/h3>\n<p>To qualify, participants must be at least 55 years old and submit an application form, due June 1, 2026. Tuition for the program will be $450. Scholarships are available.<\/p>\n<h3>Administration<\/h3>\n<p>Funding for the program will be provided by tuition payments and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Furman.\u00a0 A Steering Committee made up of Senior Leaders Alumni, with a variety of expertise and experience, will determine the course curriculum and presenters.\u00a0 The program will be administered by OLLI staff.
