The event is part of the 2024 StraightTalk series <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politics in the Divided States of America.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0The program began with an opening activity led by associate professor of sociology, Dr. Claire Whitlinger, followed by a short lecture given by professor of politics and international affairs, Dr. Liz Smith. After receiving discussion prompts from Dr. Whitlinger, students participated in small group table dialogues, facilitated by Riley Institute Advance Team students. Students examined the impact of political polarization in their own college experiences and discussed how to foster a healthier political culture. Co-sponsored by Furman\u2019s <\/span><u><a id=\"OWAf1cad114-04c1-41bd-afb8-3e5172a62cb9\" title=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/on-discourse\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/on-discourse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-linkindex=\"1\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">On Discourse Initiative<\/a><\/u>, this program gave students a chance to learn about and practice civil discourse and dialogue across political differences one week prior to Election Day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prior to this event, Advance Team students received a two-part training facilitated by Dr. Claire Whitlinger, learning skills and best practices for engaging in civil discourse and facilitating meaningful dialogues across differences. Advance Team students reported feeling well-prepared and equipped to facilitate small group dialogue at tables. Participant survey feedback was overwhelmingly positive and conveys a student desire for more dialogue-based CLPs.
