This fall, Furman professors are encouraging students to engage in healthy discourse, dialogue, and debate through various activities, from analyzing historical American speeches to exploring Battlestar Galactica.<\/p>\n
Dr. Lewis\u2019s Great Speeches class examines the rhetorical history of women debating the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Students will explore arguments from both sides, highlighting how healthy discourse was possible two generations ago and remains relevant today.<\/p>\n
Dr. Nelsen\u2019s first-year writing seminar, Learning Politics Through Battlestar Galactica, looks at the show\u2019s portrayal of controversial issues like politics, religion, war, gender, race, class, and abortion. Students are paired with classmates holding different perspectives, instructed to listen to and articulate each other\u2019s arguments, and then the class critically examines these arguments.<\/p>\n
Finally, in Dr. Brandon Inabinet\u2019s Rhetoric and Strategy course, students will explore debate and communication strategies. Facilitated debates are a key component of this class.<\/p>\n
