A Tale of Proto-Japan,” Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The event is open to the public and is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program. General admission is $40. Furman students are admitted free of charge. Known for creating physically demanding works that engage with contemporary social and political issues, Shimojima turns her attention to questions of Japanese identity, history and imperial symbolism. As performers move through a slowly rotating, human-sized wheel, the work layers sacred ritual, wartime imagery and traces of early festival culture into a surreal pageant of national mythmaking. The result is a provocative exploration of the stories nations tell about themselves and the institutions that sustain them.<\/p>\n
Furman’s Shusuke Yagi, professor of Asian Studies and anthropology, said, “We feel very honored to host KEDAGORO’s inaugural American three-city tour to commemorate the 250th Year of the United States. It is a privilege to share this rare and celebratory occasion with the community.”<\/p>\n
The U.S. tour of “The Age is Yours, My Liege! A Tale of Proto-Japan” is produced and organized by Japan Society, with support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, Japan Arts Council; Arts Council Tokyo (Creation Grant); and The Harkness Foundation for Dance.
