{"id":99,"date":"2011-10-17T19:38:55","date_gmt":"2011-10-17T23:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2011\/10\/17\/furmans-chapter-of-sigma-alpha-iota-wins-national-achievement-award\/"},"modified":"2022-11-08T13:39:21","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T18:39:21","slug":"furmans-chapter-of-sigma-alpha-iota-wins-national-achievement-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furmans-chapter-of-sigma-alpha-iota-wins-national-achievement-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman\u2019s chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota wins national achievement award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sai-music.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-497 lazyload\" title=\"sai-music\" data-src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sai-music.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 407px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 407\/300;\" \/><\/a>Furman\u2019s Theta Lambda Chapter of the music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota, has been recognized as the outstanding chapter for the 2010-11 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The Katherine Becker National Collegiate Chapter Achievement Award is given annually to a chapter whose officers and members have achieved distinction in several areas.\u00a0 The chapter must fulfill National Objectives and complete all local and national obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Theta Lambda has a tradition of service and many chapter activities reflect that commitment.\u00a0 The sisters regularly serve as ushers for music department events.\u00a0 They also organize receptions for guest artists.\u00a0 Many required solo recitals include a reception hosted by Theta Lambda.\u00a0 The chapter also presents an annual scholarship, the Saint Cecilia Scholarship, to an outstanding underclass music major.<\/p>\n<p>During this past year the chapter organized a 5K walk \u2013 The Beat Brahms Walk.\u00a0 The proceeds were donated to VHS-1\u2019s Save the Music campaign.\u00a0 For several years the chapter has also organized a benefit event for ASTEP \u2013 Artists Striving to End Poverty.\u00a0 The chapter also makes an annual contribution to SAI Philanthropies, Inc.\u00a0 All together Theta Lambda contributed over $2,500 to these causes.<\/p>\n<p>Theta Lambda also works in the community, supporting the Girl Scouts and visiting residents of local nursing homes.\u00a0 The chapter was host for the annual Province Day attended by sisters from Appalachian State, Western Carolina, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Mars Hill College.<\/p>\n<p>Theta Lambda was selected first as the province candidate and then as the southeast region candidate.\u00a0 This summer the fraternity\u2019s National Executive Board reviewed all the regional candidates and chose Theta Lambda to be the recipient.<\/p>\n<p>The National President congratulated Theta Lambda saying, \u201cYou have worked hard to fulfill the SAI National Objectives, support SAI Philanthropies, music education, and activities on your campus, and we pleased to present this to you in recognition of that work.\u00a0 May you continue to be an exemplary chapter of SAI.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Furman\u2019s Theta Lambda Chapter of the music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota, has been recognized as the outstanding chapter for the 2010-11 academic year.
