Painted pencil yellow, the square wooden pole, standing about 7 feet high, reads \u201cMay peace prevail on Earth\u201d in English, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/cothran-center-vocational-reflection\/\">The Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection<\/a> presented the pole after students encountered poles during trips to the Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland and to Montgomery, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The pole \u201crepresents Furman\u2019s hope and commitment toward peace in our community and the entire world,\u201d according to Abijah Leamon \u201924, one of several students who spoke at the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>John Harris, director of the Cothran Center, said the peace pole \u201cis also a reminder of the peace that can be felt individually and internally by those who work toward understanding their own vocations and callings. Personally, the peace pole reminds me of the special experiences we have had with our students in locations where these poles already exist.\u201d There are more than 250,000 peace poles around the world.<\/p>\n<p>President Elizabeth Davis said the peace pole symbolizes the Cothran Center\u2019s mission of reflection, which is central to The Furman Advantage. She also thanked Jeanette Cothran, who was in attendance, and her husband John, for their gift in 2013 that endowed the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this peace pole encourages us to pause and appreciate what we have, and to pray in your tradition for people for whom peace is fleeting, or foreign,\u201d Davis said. \u201cLet us use this peace pole to motivate us to spread peace wherever and however we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54870\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Peace-Pole-Dedication-students-4.22.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54870\" class=\"wp-image-54870 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Peace-Pole-Dedication-students-4.22.jpg\" alt=\"One student uses American Sign Language as three others look on.\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/253;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Bush &#8217;24 uses American Sign Language to say &#8220;May peace prevail on Earth,&#8221; which is painted on the peace pole in four languages. Jenny Yue &#8217;22 spoke in Chinese, Botamina Sorial &#8217;23 spoke in Arabic and Shakira Olivera-Bautista &#8217;25 spoke in Spanish.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students, many of whom were on the Montgomery trip, completed the dedication program. The Furman University Gospel Ensemble sang \u201cPeace\u201d by New Direction. Leamon and Louisa Brown \u201923 described the history that brought the peace pole to Furman. The words on the pole were recited by students in their native languages: Matt Bush \u201924 in English and American Sign Language, Jenny Yue \u201922 in Chinese, Botamina Sorial \u201923 in Arabic and Shakira Olivera-Bautista \u201925 in Spanish. Kelsey Sumter \u201924 read the poem \u201cAmazing Peace\u201d by Maya Angelou. Eboni Johnson \u201922 read a short essay titled \u201cNow What?\u201d Clinton Washington \u201922 led a moment of silence.
