{"id":9792,"date":"2022-03-02T18:53:03","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T18:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/03\/brooke-dominiak-23-wins-first-socon-entrepreneurship-challenge\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:46:41","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:46:41","slug":"brooke-dominiak-23-wins-first-socon-entrepreneurship-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/brooke-dominiak-23-wins-first-socon-entrepreneurship-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooke Dominiak &#8217;23 wins first SoCon Entrepreneurship Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brooke Dominiak \u201923 pitched her way to a win in the inaugural Southern Conference Entrepreneurship Challenge, becoming the event\u2019s first ever for-profit champion on Saturday, Feb. 26.<\/p>\n<p>The competition involved teams from all 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/soconsports.com\/index.aspx\">SoCon<\/a> schools in two divisions, for-profit and not-for-profit. Dominiak won the for-profit division with her venture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.togobros.com\/\">To-Go Bros<\/a>, a meal delivery service for college campuses, that also won the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2021\/04\/12\/mindfulness-waste-pickup-the-dh-delivered-paladin-pitch-competitors-offer-solutions\/\">2021 Paladin Pitch Competition<\/a>. She took home a trophy and a $10,000 check.<\/p>\n<p>Alexandra Valdovinos \u201925, a music education major, pitched her non-profit idea called Monta\u00f1a, a business designed to reduce waste by redesigning sustainable reed packaging for musical instruments. She made it to the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like all my hard work and hustle had finally paid off, and I have never been so proud,\u201d said Dominiak, a communication studies major. \u201cMy passion and drive for my business venture was reinforced when they called my name as the SoCon winner, and it was the best feeling ever!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Shark Tank-like format was created to \u201cshowcase students with an idea for an innovative business or non-profit organization,\u201d and to illustrate that the conference \u201cis more than just athletic competition,\u201d according to a SoCon press release.<\/p>\n<p>The competition was held at The Citadel&#8217;s Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business. Students from each of the schools pitched their ideas to a panel of judges on Friday, and finalists were selected to pitch again on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat set Brooke apart from other competitors was the delivery of her pitch,\u201d said Matt Reeve, manager of campus programs for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2022\/02\/25\/furman-launches-angel-analyst-fellowship-program-with-venturesouth\/\">The Robert and Margaret Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship<\/a>. \u201cWe helped her craft her pitch over the months by having her pitch to, and hear feedback from, multiple audiences, from The Hill Institute Leadership Council to her student peers to Fortune 500 CEOs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition helped Dominiak realize her company\u2019s potential, she said. \u201cTo-Go Bro\u2019s truly has the potential to revolutionize the on-campus food industry for colleges all across the nation,\u201d she said. \u201cThe exposure and publicity I received from this event gave me connections with many investors who are interested in helping me implement this concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she\u2019ll use the cash prize to further develop her app and invest in technology that will enable her to test it at Furman and other universities around the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brooke Dominiak \u201923 pitched her way to a win in the inaugural Southern Conference Entrepreneurship Challenge, becoming the event\u2019s first ever for-profit champion on Saturday, Feb. 26.
