{"id":9543,"date":"2021-09-16T01:40:37","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T01:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/22\/new-cohort-of-millennium-fellows-tackles-un-sustainable-development-goals\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:43:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:43:18","slug":"new-cohort-of-millennium-fellows-tackles-un-sustainable-development-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/new-cohort-of-millennium-fellows-tackles-un-sustainable-development-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"New Millennium Fellows tackle United Nations Sustainable Development Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nine Furman University students have been selected for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.millenniumfellows.org\/class-of-2020\">Millennium Fellowship<\/a>, a program of the United Nations Academic Impact and Millennium Campus Network.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2018, the Millennium Fellowship convenes, challenges and celebrates undergraduate student leadership toward advancing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0<\/a>on campuses worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the program drew more than 25,000 applicants from over 2,200 campuses. For the class of 2021, the Furman University Millennium Fellows are among more than 2,000 students selected from 136 campuses (just 6%) spanning 30 nations.<\/p>\n<p>Furman\u2019s latest cohort joins 35 other Millennium Fellows selected from the university since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 Furman Millennium Fellows include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gracie Bartel \u201922, sustainability science and Spanish, Charlotte, North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Katy Beasley \u201924, Fayetteville, North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Madison Eichhorn \u201922, sustainability science and urban studies, Waxhaw, North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Amber Jacobsen \u201922, public health, Tega Cay, South Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Ava Macheledt \u201922, history and politics and international affairs, Duncan, South Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Ian McPherson \u201923, environmental and conservation biology, Winston Salem, North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Zane Newell \u201924, sustainability science and Spanish, Salt Lake City, Utah<\/li>\n<li>Adare Taylor \u201922, Earth and environmental sciences, Berwyn, Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Eli Titherington \u201921, public health (business emphasis), Weddington, North Carolina<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During fall semester, Millennium Fellows will take action to support the United Nations Academic Impact Principles and help propel the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, such as zero hunger, quality education, climate action, and good health and well-being.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52318\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52318\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52318 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/eli-titherington-21-headshot-400.jpg\" alt=\"white man in jacket, Eli Titherington '21\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/400;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eli Titherington &#8217;21<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Each student applied with a project that relates to any of the U.N. goals.<\/p>\n<p>Eli Titherington chose \u201cgood health and well-being\u201d for the basis of his project. He created Relax Rx, a peer-based mindfulness platform for young adults aimed at promoting mental health, self-awareness and a holistic approach to wellness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that this project will help decrease the stigmatization surrounding mental health issues for those here at Furman and in the broader community,\u201d Titherington said.<\/p>\n<p>He says his \u201cfront-porch\u201d style for wellness through Relax Rx makes mental health more approachable and inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent cultures and communities perceive mental health in different ways. Relax Rx provides spaces for disproportionally affected groups to help reduce disparities in mental health coping resources,\u201d he said. He debuted his platform at Furman\u2019s Paladin Pitch Competition. It was funded through a Shucker Leadership Grant.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52313\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52313\" class=\"size-full wp-image-52313 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ava-macheledt-450.jpg\" alt=\"white woman in black jacket\" width=\"450\" height=\"291\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/291;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ava Macheledt &#8217;22<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ava Macheledt\u2019s project aligns with \u201csustainable cities and communities\u201d and \u201cpeace, justice and strong institutions.\u201d A partnership between the Greenville Police Department and Mill Village Farms, her project is focused on breaking down barriers of bias and misunderstanding through sustainable community farming.<\/p>\n<p>Macheledt launched the project over the summer through a $10,000 grant from the Kathryn W. Davis Foundation. \u201cIt changed my life,\u201d Macheledt said about her \u201cpassion project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited to continue it this fall and share my experience with my other Millennium Fellows,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Millennium Fellowship provides training, networking and recognition to assist students in maximizing the social impact of their projects.
