{"id":9237,"date":"2021-03-22T13:02:28","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T17:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/29\/furman-receives-second-25-million-grant-from-the-duke-endowment\/"},"modified":"2025-02-14T14:47:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T19:47:31","slug":"furman-receives-second-25-million-grant-from-the-duke-endowment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-receives-second-25-million-grant-from-the-duke-endowment\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman receives second $25 million grant from The Duke Endowment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University has received a $25 million grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeendowment.org\/\">The Duke Endowment<\/a> to expand and advance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/furman-advantage\/\">The Furman Advantage<\/a>, the university\u2019s transformational approach to offering every student a pathway toward a meaningful and valuable college experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Duke Endowment\u2019s founder, James B. Duke, had a vision for the future that he expressed through philanthropy,\u201d said Minor Shaw, chair of the Endowment\u2019s board. \u201cThe goals of The Furman Advantage echo Mr. Duke\u2019s forward-thinking, innovative approach. We are proud to play a role in Furman\u2019s efforts to build something truly special in higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Furman Advantage provides every Furman student a personalized four-year pathway to graduation with academic advising, mentoring and career guidance, coupled with engaged learning experiences, such as undergraduate research, internships or study away, and reflection to make meaning of all of these elements.<\/p>\n<p>The new grant brings The Duke Endowment\u2019s direct total investment in The Furman Advantage to $52.5 million. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2016\/10\/05\/university-launches-the-furman-advantage\/\">The Furman Advantage launched in the fall of 2016<\/a> with an initial grant of $25 million. In 2017, The Duke Endowment provided <a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2017\/10\/19\/2-5-million-grant-from-duke-endowment-to-fund-furmangallup-study\/\">$2.5 million<\/a> for Furman to partner with Gallup to help assess the impact of The Furman Advantage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the generous support from The Duke Endowment, The Furman Advantage has become integral to Furman University. We are The Furman Advantage,\u201d Furman University President Elizabeth Davis said. \u201cEach individual student has the opportunity to receive transformational experiences and guidance on a pathway to success, so the quality of their education is reflected in the quality of their lives long after they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely grateful that The Duke Endowment recognized and funded our early ambitions, and we are thrilled that they have deemed our early successes worthy of their continued support,\u201d Davis said. \u201cTheir financial investment is making a difference in the lives of students and their families that will be felt for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commitment of The Furman Advantage to reach every student is unique, said Brandon Busteed, president of University Partners and global head of Learn-Work Innovation at Kaplan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t think of a single university who has committed to making sure that internships, study away and research are available to every single student,\u201d said Busteed, who previously served as Gallup\u2019s executive director of education and workforce development. \u201cThat commitment continues to be the real magical element of The Furman Advantage, in my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurman has not only implemented a unique plan for all its students, the university is continually measuring and assessing progress,\u201d said Bill Barnet, chair of the Endowment\u2019s Committee on Educational Institutions. \u201cFurman\u2019s planning and measurements create a blueprint for this campus and for others to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data show The Furman Advantage is helping draw students to Furman. In 2019, nearly 45 percent of women and 35 percent of men who enrolled said The Furman Advantage strongly influenced their decision to attend Furman. Data from the first three years also point to many successes for students, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>funding support for all students who applied for summer research and internships,<\/li>\n<li>increased need-based funding for study away,<\/li>\n<li>increased participation in engaged learning experiences, and<\/li>\n<li>increased participation in multiple engaged learning experiences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these factors add up to students who are more likely to graduate, to think their education was valuable, to feel more affinity for Furman, and to start their post-graduate careers in jobs or graduate studies that they find fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>With the 2016 grant from The Duke Endowment, Furman created an administrative infrastructure with positions to support faculty and students, including an associate provost for engaged learning and an associate dean for mentoring and advising as well as positions that oversee internships, faculty career and professional development, student career engagement, and student equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Furman also used the grant to expand funding for engaged learning experiences; create robust assessment protocols to measure, evaluate and adjust programming; and support the small-scale pilot test of Pathways, an intentional mentoring and advising program for first- and second-year students that was designed to set the foundation for the four-year experience by addressing themes related to academics, engaged learning, career development, reflection, and diversity, equity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>What makes The Furman Advantage work at Furman is the universal commitment across campus, according to Busteed, who has been familiar with The Furman Advantage since its beginning. Other universities, regardless of size, should follow Furman\u2019s example, but it takes commitment and focus on a singular mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a marketing message and a value proposition,\u201d Busteed said. \u201cThere\u2019s a tremendous amount of intentionality. The whole university has said, \u2018This is who we want to be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new funding will allow the university to continue developing all the programs that started with the first grant: expanding and enhancing engaged learning experiences, enhancing the mentoring network and expanding career engagement activities through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/career-services\/\">Malone Center for Career Engagement<\/a> and through academic departments to create career and professional development activities for students that are specific to their interests and disciplines, said Ken Peterson, vice president for academic affairs and provost.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will also increase access and lower barriers to engagement for all students. This could mean increasing a student\u2019s sense of belonging; providing funds for premiere internships, undergraduate research or study away; and funding student trips to meet with alumni mentors working in specific industries, said Connie Carson, vice president for student life.<\/p>\n<p>Pathways, which has been pilot tested and enhanced over the past four years with a small group of students, is currently under consideration by the faculty to expand it to all students. If it is accepted, Peterson said, the new funding from The Duke Endowment will finance it for the first five years.<\/p>\n<p>Key to The Furman Advantage\u2019s success is the integration of academic affairs and student life, Peterson and Carson said. For example, in the Pathways program, students are encouraged to think of their career potential by considering what they learn in classrooms and in their extra- and co-curricular activities and giving them real-world practice with their education.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, engaged learning experiences, such as internships, study away and undergraduate research, are extensions of academic study. And, what students learn about themselves through mentoring and advising, and through intentional reflection exercises, informs the kinds of engaged learning experiences in which they participate, as well as major and career choices.<\/p>\n<p>The integration of academics and student life is unique, said Michelle Horhota, associate dean of mentoring and advising. Furman has avoided the administrative silos common on many university campuses and has worked hard to create and practice a shared vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Frequent assessment has been a hallmark of The Furman Advantage. Students in the Pathways program report higher satisfaction scores for advising than students not in Pathways. The early pilot data also suggest that Pathways erases gaps between majority students and students from low-income families, first-generation college students and students of color in terms of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>satisfaction,<\/li>\n<li>belonging,<\/li>\n<li>participation in engaged learning experiences,<\/li>\n<li>resilience (the likelihood that students will graduate), and<\/li>\n<li>earlier and more frequent appointments with career counseling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Data collected for engaged learning experiences, which are open to all students, show that more students are participating in a higher number of engaged learning experiences. Data also show that having multiple engaged learning experiences increases the odds that a student will be employed or in graduate school at graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Among students in the class of 2016, which predates The Furman Advantage, 65 percent participated in two or more experiences and 28 percent in at least three. Among the class of 2020, which became sophomores when The Furman Advantage launched and the Center for Engaged Learning began facilitating and assessing experiences, the numbers rose to\u00a0 81 percent and 65 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>One early success of The Furman Advantage was the ability to fully fund summer undergraduate research projects, extend funding for internships and increase need-based funding for study away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as a student and a faculty sponsor turn in a high-quality proposal on time, we fund the summer research project or internship experience,\u201d said Beth Pontari, associate provost for engaged learning. \u201cHigh-quality\u201d experiences are those that impacted students&#8217; worldview, related to their post-graduation plans and applied what they learned in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not turning students away because funding is scarce and we have to prioritize by student seniority or by students who have already had an experience. That\u2019s a game-changer from where we were five years ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, Furman has developed The Furman Advantage in much the same way the university encourages its students to approach learning and life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learn, we experience, we reflect and we adapt,\u201d Davis said. \u201cWe have applied the same hallmarks of a liberal arts education to the way we provide an education.
