{"id":9033,"date":"2020-10-30T00:24:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T00:24:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2021\/07\/14\/turning-out-the-furman-vote\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:36:08","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:36:08","slug":"turning-out-the-furman-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/turning-out-the-furman-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Everybody is personally affected&#8217; \u2013 Students, alumna turn out the vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many, the 2020 election carries a special urgency.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a reality that has Qwameek Bethea \u201921 doing his part to get out the vote among Furman students, who voted at a rate of only 30% in the last general election. He hopes it jumps to 70%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that\u2019s a big number, but considering everything that\u2019s going on, we have too many reasons to vote and no reason not to,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is personally affected in some way by this election. That\u2019s what\u2019s really driving students to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bethea\u2019s first goal as president of Furman&#8217;s NAACP chapter is to set a good example for his fellow members. Two weeks ago, he drove 215 miles to his hometown of Hamer, South Carolina, to cast his vote. He says he is hearing how some students will be driving farther distances or even flying home to vote because they didn\u2019t receive their absentee ballots. \u201cThat\u2019s a whole other kind of dedication,&#8221; says Bethea.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, his focus has centered on educating members about how to register to vote, how the electoral college system works, making sure students have a plan in place for voting, and working with other groups on campus like Dins Vote and initiatives like Paladin Pledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely support the Paladin Pledge and what it stands for,\u201d says Bethea.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47032\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47032\" class=\"wp-image-47032 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/202009016_EricaDaly_NEWS.jpg\" alt=\"Erica Daly '22 holds a Dins Vote pin in front of Johns Hall\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/253;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47032\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erica Daly &#8217;22.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pledge organizer Erica Daly &#8217;22, a politics and international affairs major, explains the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/15UWiSotpuglSr85RcFbpXvAT9UVKzsuRPlNwmcZFhkQ\/edit\">Paladin Pledge<\/a>\u00a0as an offshoot of Dins Vote, which aims to increase voter turnout on campus. For the pledge, students simply commit to vote in this election via a Google doc.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage participation \u00a0in the election, students have the option to share why they are voting and to be entered into a class competition and a Greek Life Competition. Competition rankings, updates, and reasons for voting are posted on Instagram @paladinspledge.<\/p>\n<p>Oct. 29, \u00a0professors of politics and international affairs Glen Halva-Neubauer and Teresa Cosby led a CLP called \u201cVoter Suppression in America.\u201d It was co-sponsored by diverse groups, including to the Furman NAACP, Furman Justice Forum, Furman Conservative Society, Furman Mock Trial, Student Diversity Council, Furman Pre-Law Society and Student League for Black Culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoter suppression is real,&#8221; says Bethea, who helped facilitate the event.<\/p>\n<p>He describes the removal of high-throughput mail-sorting machines in selected post offices, the lack of accessible ballot drop-off boxes in Texas, the long lines and wait times at early polling locations, and places where armed \u201cpoll watchers\u201d have been recruited for Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really just want people to understand the seriousness of what is going on and let them know (voter suppression) is a real, valid concern that we should be having,\u201d Bethea says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48966\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48966\" class=\"wp-image-48966 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Lillian-Brock-Flemming-at-fountain.jpg\" alt=\"Black woman in graduation regalia\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/241;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48966\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lillian Brock Flemming received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Furman in 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Greenville chapter of \u00a0NAACP is also doing its part to make the voting experience safe and more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>Lillian Brock Flemming \u201971, \u201975 (M) and \u201914 (H), a member of the Greenville City Council and a lifetime member of the NAACP, says the Greenville Branch was selected by the national and state NAACP offices to participate in the Protect Our Voters at the Poll Monitoring Program.<\/p>\n<p>Flemming says the program has enlisted \u201cpeople of good conscience\u201d \u2013 not all of them NAACP members \u2013 who want to protect and help voters during early voting and on Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lines are extremely long, and it takes hours sometimes to vote,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople are exhausted \u2026 some of us have actually stood in place for voters while they go to the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether distributing water and snacks or standing in line for voters who need relief from the extended wait times, Flemming says the public is grateful for the support while they exercise their civic duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt matters that somebody cares about them,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;That\u2019s the point \u2013 protecting the people at the poll.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Student Government Association\u00a0President Griffin Mills &#8217;21, casting a ballot is an act toward shaping the future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44107\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44107\" class=\"wp-image-44107 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GriffinMills.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-44107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Griffin Mills &#8217;21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI am voting not only for the present but for the future of our country,&#8221; says the sustainability sciences major and poverty studies minor. &#8220;It\u2019s our duty as citizens to vote, and I hope my generation is able to rise to the challenge this election year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s at the polls where the decision becomes deeply personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an African American, and with voter suppression, realizing what our people have gone through to earn the right to vote, that makes me more compelled to go do it,&#8221; says Bethea. &#8220;To have so many different things on the line, I feel like this is why we have this right, and it\u2019s important that we make our voices heard.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many, the 2020 election carries a special urgency.
