The event was led by Wyoming&#8217;s first female supreme court justice and\u00a0chief justice Marilyn Kite, who is now retired, and Furman pre-law advisor, Maya Russell.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47596\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47596\" class=\"wp-image-47596 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Maya-Russell-in-RBG-shirt-293-wide.jpg\" alt=\"Maya Russell\" width=\"293\" height=\"438\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 293px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 293\/438;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maya Russell, J.D., pre-law advisor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ginsburg\u2019s death in September at the age of 87 led to a rancorous confirmation battle in the Senate over President Trump\u2019s intention to replace Ginsburg with circuit judge Amy Coney Barrett. On Monday evening, the Senate confirmed Barrett to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing several of Ginsburg\u2019s majority opinions and dissents during the Cultural Life Program on Oct. 22, Russell said that the justice did not seek the \u201cnotorious\u201d title popularized by her admirers as \u201cthe notorious RBG,\u201d but embraced it with a smile and good humor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47598\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47598\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47598 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Andrew-Allen-350x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Allen '21\" width=\"293\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 293px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 293\/350;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Allen &#8217;21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Andrew Allen \u201921 said he \u201cadmired Justice Ginsburg\u2019s frequent willingness to reach across the aisle while drafting her majority, concurring and dissenting opinions.\u201d\u00a0He said he hopes to emulate her \u201cmuch-needed bipartisanship in an effort to contribute much-needed collaboration, empathy, and respect to an increasingly polarized legal community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CLP explored Ginsburg\u2019s unique friendship with one of her colleagues on the court.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47600\" style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47600\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47600 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Bridget-Scalia-2020-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"Bridget Scalia\" width=\"294\" height=\"372\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 294px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 294\/372;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bridget Scalia &#8217;23.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI can point to RBG and Justice Antonin Scalia as the perfect example for how two people with very different opinions can in fact be not only civil, but be wonderful friends, whose presence enriches the others\u2019 life and welcomes laughter and improvement in the workplace,\u201d Russell said during the tribute.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget Scalia \u201923 said she enjoyed Russell\u2019s depiction of the close friendship that her late grandfather, Scalia, had with Ginsburg \u2013 a bond across differences that she hopes to model in her own relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Russell said that she is most hopeful for the future when working with students and celebrates them as they come to embrace their own version of \u201cfabulously notorious.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 500 students gathered this month for a virtual tribute to honor late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
