For as long as there is a Furman University, Jan. 29 will be spent honoring and remembering Joseph Vaughn ’68, the school’s first African American student who enrolled on this date in 1965.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, hundreds of people gathered on the steps of the James B. Duke Library for a commemoration celebrating Joseph Vaughn Day<\/a>, which started with a hymn sung by the\u00a0Furman University Gospel Ensemble and some emotional remarks from Deborah Allen, director of the Center for Inclusive Communities, before culminating with a march down Milford Mall to Daniel Chapel.
