{"id":8612,"date":"2020-01-31T15:00:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T15:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/25\/furman-receives-carnegie-community-engagement-classification\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:31:45","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:31:45","slug":"furman-receives-carnegie-community-engagement-classification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/furman-receives-carnegie-community-engagement-classification\/","title":{"rendered":"Furman receives Carnegie Community Engagement Classification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiefoundation.org\/\">The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching<\/a> announced today that Furman University has received the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation that indicates commitment to, and activity toward, \u201cfinding ways to engage with community partners, building on community assets and addressing a wide array of community challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43155\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/carnegie-seal-400.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43155\" class=\"wp-image-43155 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/carnegie-seal-400.jpg\" alt=\"carnegie community engagement\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/400;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-43155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furman joins 119 colleges and universities to receive the designation this year.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Furman is one of only 18 liberal arts and sciences universities to receive the Community Engagement Classification this year, and one of 359 institutions total. It was awarded following a process of self-study, which was later assessed by a national review committee based at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/academics\/college\/swearer\/\">Brown University\u2019s Swearer Center<\/a>, the administrative and research home for the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese newly-classified and re-classified institutions are doing exceptional work to forward their public purpose in and through community engagement that enriches teaching and research while also benefiting the broader community,\u201d Mathew Johnson, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swearer.brown.edu\">Swearer Center<\/a>, wrote in a letter to awardees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Carnegie application process is deep and rigorous, and I think it validates that mutually beneficial community engagement is in Furman\u2019s DNA,\u201d said Mike Winiski, executive director of Community-Engaged Learning at Furman. \u201cI look forward to using the information from the self-study to ensure that Furman becomes an even more integral part of a Greenville in which everyone flourishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Furman is the official recipient of this designation, this is truly an honor that we share with all of the organizations and people we partner with in Greenville and the Upstate,\u201d Furman President Elizabeth Davis said. \u201cThe Carnegie classification further demonstrates our commitment to engaging our students, faculty and staff in the community to help study and find solutions to our shared challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recent example of Furman\u2019s commitment to community engaged learning includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inclusivegvl.org\/\">2019 study<\/a> conducted for United Way of Greenville County by a Furman research team.
