But none so far has topped No. 9 in June, when Skylar earned some scientific acclaim of her own when she won the undergraduate presentation award at the 2019 IBNS meeting in Cairns, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could see the smile on my mom\u2019s face,\u201d Lambert said. \u201cIt made her proud, and that is something I will remember for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lambert presented \u201cEstablishing an In-Utero Valproic Acid Model of Autism and Evaluating a Mitochondrial Metabolic Intervention,\u201d based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/undergraduate-research\/\">undergraduate research<\/a> she did in the first phase of a multi-institutional, longitudinal project in Assistant Professor of Biology and Neuroscience Linnea Freeman\u2019s lab at Furman. The project, funded by grants from the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and Institutional Development Awards (IDeA), explored how mitochondrial metabolism impacts susceptibility for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and studied a potential mitochondrial metabolic intervention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main passion is what I would call nutritional neuroscience. We\u2019re interested in what you eat and how it impacts your brain,\u201d Freeman said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41603\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41603\" class=\"wp-image-41603 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/LinneaFreeman-Biology.jpg\" alt=\"Assistant Professor of Biology Linnea \" width=\"214\" height=\"246\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 214px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 214\/246;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Furman Assistant Professor of Biology and Neuroscience Linnea Freeman.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In this case, that meant exploring previous research suggesting that people with autism may metabolize the amino acid tryptophan differently. \u201cIf you have disruption to the tryptophan metabolism, then your cells might be making less energy,\u201d Freeman said. They tested the hypothesis by exposing mice pups to nicotinamide riboside, a naturally occurring chemical essential to cellular respiration, shortly after birth.<\/p>\n<p>Half of the pups&#8217; mothers had received an injection of valproic acid, used to treat seizure disorders but also known to mimic behavioral outcomes of autism in mice. The other half were given injections of saline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as they\u2019re born, in their drinking water they get exposed to this supplement, this metabolic intervention, to see if their behavior has improved,\u201d Freeman said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing is nicotinamide riboside may lead to some improvements to anxiety aspects (of autism), but we\u2019re not seeing a major improvement to the sociability aspect of our model of autism \u2026 Our preliminary data is revealing that nicotinamide riboside may have the greatest impact on the anxiety seen in our female mice. We really need to continue to increase the number of animals and get a better idea how this is working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly Lambert is a <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.richmond.edu\/faculty\/klambert\">professor of behavioral neuroscience<\/a> at the University of Richmond, and she also presented in Cairns. Skylar Lambert said when it was her time to be in the spotlight, there were some nerves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so comfortable around these people, but I thought, \u2018Dang, I really have something to prove,\u2019 whether it\u2019s because of my mom or this was the first time a member of our lab had been to this conference,\u201d Skylar said. \u201cAt that point I was extra nervous because (Dr. Freeman) wasn\u2019t there to back me up, but I had to prove that our lab was doing something awesome.
