{"id":843,"date":"2016-02-17T19:52:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T00:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/17\/world-religions-symposium-to-be-held-at-furman-university\/"},"modified":"2022-11-07T13:52:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T18:52:39","slug":"world-religions-symposium-to-be-held-at-furman-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/world-religions-symposium-to-be-held-at-furman-university\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Islam: In First Person:&#8221; World religions symposium to be held at Furman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OCTOBER 8, 2012<br \/>\nby Tina Underwood, Contributing Writer<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ayoub-photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4362 lazyload\" title=\"ayoub-photo\" data-src=\"http:\/\/newsimg.furman.edu.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/ayoub-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"240\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 173px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 173\/240;\" \/><\/a>Furman University will hold its inaugural World Religions Symposium with the first of seven lectures and panel discussions beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in Daniel Chapel.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium is free and open to the public, and the theme of this year\u2019s forum is \u201cIslam: In First Person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first speaker for the symposium is Dr. Mahmoud Ayoub whose talk is titled, \u201cA Muslim View of Christianity.\u201d As an expert in inter-religious dialogue, American society and institutions, and Islam in America, Ayoub has worked with the U.S. State Department since 1999 on diplomatic programs in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The World Religions Symposium aims to provide an outlet for envoys of various religious traditions to tell their own stories, regardless of how complex or challenging those stories may be.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium was spurred by Furman\u2019s Muslim Student Association which garnered support from the Office of the Chaplains, the A.J.
