The event is sponsored by the American History Book Club and Forum (AHBC) and Furman University.<\/p>\n<p>The event begins with a book signing from 5:30 to 6 p.m., with Beschloss\u2019s presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $50 per person, with the opportunity to include an additional donation to the Furman University Huff Scholars Fund, which supports Furman student internships and research and promotes history literacy in grades K-12.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Huff student and alumni scholar winners will also be recognized at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Furman senior history major Samuel M. Hayes will receive the A.V. Huff American History Scholars Award. Hayes, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, was chosen for the $1,500 award for his research with Furman history professors Marian Strobel and Courtney Tollison Hartness. Hayes&#8217;s research is titled \u201cHistoric Properties and Sites: Research, Preservation, and Memorialization<em>.<\/em>\u201d After graduation, he plans to pursue his interest in historic preservation.<\/p>\n<p>A Kate Huff History Scholars Award is going to Sara Collins Elementary School teachers Sarah Shade \u201911, M\u201917, Caroline Barrington \u201912, M\u201914 and Carrie Johnson \u201901, M\u201903. They plan to use the $1,000 award for an educational history-related field trip to Washington, D.C., this spring for fifth-grade students at the school.<\/p>\n<p>Whitney Becker \u201914, M\u201916 will also receive a Kate Huff History Scholars Award. Becker, a teacher at West View Elementary, plans to use the $1,000 award to give students the opportunity to travel back in time via virtual reality using Google Cardboard and iPods for Google Expeditions, which will allow them to experience via virtual reality what it was like for people living during the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Furman professors Marian Strobel in the Department of History and Scott Henderson and George Lipscomb in the Department of Education comprised the awards selection committee.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times has described Beschloss as \u201ceasily the most widely recognized presidential historian in the United States,\u201d and The Charlotte Observer said he \u201cknows more about America\u2019s presidents than perhaps anyone on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beschloss\u2019s first book, \u201cKennedy and Roosevelt: The Uneasy Alliance,\u201d published in 1980, originated from his senior thesis at Williams College. His most recent book, \u201cPresidents of War,\u201d published in October 2018, is a look at how presidents handled the nation\u2019s conflicts, from the War of 1812 through Vietnam. Historian Jon Meacham called the book \u201cmonumental\u201d and \u201ca landmark book about power, leadership and human nature itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beschloss\u2019s books about U.S. presidents include \u201cEisenhower: A Centennial Life,\u201d \u201cThe Crisis Years: Kennedy and Khrushchev,\u201d and \u201cPresidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989.\u201d He published two books, \u201cTaking Charge\u201d and \u201cReaching for Glory,\u201d of annotated transcripts of President Lyndon Johnson\u2019s conversations as captured on audio recordings. He also wrote the introduction and edited the best-seller \u201cJacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations of Life with John F. Kennedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beschloss is the presidential historian for NBC News and is a contributor to \u201cPBS NewsHour\u201d and The New York Times. He won an Emmy Award for hosting a Discovery Channel series and has numerous other honors, including the State of Illinois\u2019s Order of Lincoln, the Ambassador Book Prize, the Harry S.
