Erik Ching, professor of history and director of undergraduate research at Furman University, will serve as speaker when the university holds its summer commencement exercises Saturday, Aug. 17 at 4 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.<\/p>\n
The university will award approximately 45 undergraduate and graduate degrees during commencement. Furman President Elizabeth Davis will preside over the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Ching joined the Furman history faculty in 1998. He teaches courses in Latin American and African history, and has led more than a dozen study abroad programs to Mexico, Central America and southern Africa. He co-founded the El Salvador Studies Working Group, an organization of more than 150 international scholars, and also serves on the editorial board of \u201cEl Faro Academico,\u201d a Salvadoran online periodical that profiles new academic research.<\/p>\n
Ching is the author of several books, including \u201cStories of Civil War in El Salvador: A Battle Over Memory,\u201d and \u201cAuthoritarian El Salvador: Politics and the Origins of the Military Regimes, 1880\u20131940.\u201d He has also co-authored \u201cModernizing Minds in El Salvador,\u201d \u201cRemembering a Massacre in El Salvador: The Insurrection of 1932, Roque Dalton and the Politics of Historical Memory,\u201d and \u201cReframing Latin America: A Cultural Theory Reading of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ching is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, and earned master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n
