{"id":8249,"date":"2019-06-06T22:18:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T02:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2019\/06\/12\/upstate-diversity-leaders\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T18:37:22","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T23:37:22","slug":"upstate-diversity-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/upstate-diversity-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Upstate leaders become Riley Fellows, present community action projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-eight leaders from the Upstate and surrounding area have completed the Riley Institute at Furman\u2019s Diversity Leaders Initiative (DLI).<\/p>\n<p>Over the past five months, participants have examined sensitive issues related to diversity and inclusion, explored \u201cblind spots,\u201d and discussed how to suspend assumptions. Each class is expertly facilitated by Juan Johnson, an independent consultant and former Coca-Cola vice president.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the program, participants have worked in small, cross-sector groups to respond to real issues and opportunities in their communities through <a href=\"https:\/\/furman.app.box.com\/s\/qwczkn48n51u79bwykj0o204pvkjlt03\">service projects<\/a>. The projects from this class focused on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing educational opportunities for local youth through programs that expose students to valuable life lessons and skills including strategies for character-building;<\/li>\n<li>Assisting adult men experiencing homelessness transition to a better situation;<\/li>\n<li>Providing a personal piece of luggage to children in foster care offering them a sense of belonging, continuity, and respect;<\/li>\n<li>Improving safety and accessibility for every rider in the Greenlink transit system; and<\/li>\n<li>Fostering community dialogue around racial terror aimed to raise awareness, build trust, and break down barriers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_39100\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39100\" class=\"wp-image-39100 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/upstate-diversity-leaders-group-e1559858994816.jpg\" alt=\"Upstate Diversity Leaders\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduates of the Riley Institute&#8217;s Diversity Leaders Initiative become Riley Fellows and members of a powerful, cross-sector, statewide leadership network.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>DLI class members are identified through a rigorous process including a nomination, application, and interview. Individuals are selected to join the class based on their capacity to impact their organizations and communities. Each class is crafted to reflect the diverse demographics in South Carolina. In addition to the Upstate, DLI classes are selected annually in the Midlands and Lowcountry.<\/p>\n<p>DLI graduates become Riley Fellows, members of a powerful, cross-sector, statewide leadership network that includes CEOs of corporations, mayors, city and county council members, legislators, school superintendents, pastors and rabbis, non-profit heads, chamber of commerce directors, and community leaders.
