Currently available as a minor, the WGSS major will be offered to students for the first time in fall 2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38990\" style=\"width: 435px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38990\" class=\"wp-image-38990 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/gretchen-braun-425.jpg\" alt=\"WGSS\" width=\"425\" height=\"273\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 425px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 425\/273;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WGSS Co-director Gretchen Braun<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited not only about the intellectual and professional opportunities this major will provide Furman students, but more importantly, we look forward to its role in making our community more diverse and inclusive,\u201d said WGSS Co-director Gretchen Braun, speaking on behalf of the WGSS co-directors and oversight committee.<\/p>\n<p>The new major will include a requirement of either WGS 230 \u2013 Issues in Women&#8217;s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, or WGS 250 \u2013 Introduction to Queer Theory and Sexuality Studies; a requirement of either one of two new courses, WGS 502 \u2013 Directed Research or WGS 503 \u2013 Directed Internship; and at least another 28 credit hours (equivalent to seven additional four-credit courses) in WGSS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38991\" style=\"width: 435px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38991\" class=\"wp-image-38991 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/savita-nair-425.jpg\" alt=\"WGSS\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 425px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 425\/283;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WGSS Co-director Savita Nair<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to the relevant coursework the WGSS major provides, undergraduates have opportunities for student-designed, faculty-mentored research and for internships that help students connect their academic interest in women\u2019s, gender and LGBT issues with their career aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>The WGSS major has evolved over decades at Furman with input for the proposal from the WGSS co-directors, the WGSS oversight committee, WGSS faculty and their home departments, Visiting Associate Provost for Special Projects Heidi Bostic, current students and alumni.
