Whitney Maness, a Furman University junior from Rock Hill, has been named a 2019 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance civic engagement in higher education.<\/p>\n
Maness is one of 262 students chosen from Campus Compact member colleges and universities that represent 41 states, Washington, D.C., Mexico and Greece. The one-year Newman Civic Fellowship supports the next generation of public problem solvers in their personal, professional and civic growth.<\/p>\n
Campus Compact provides a variety of exclusive opportunities and events for the student fellows, including a national conference that will take place in Boston in November 2019.<\/p>\n
Maness is a communication studies and Spanish major at Furman. She works with several organizations in the Greenville area, including the Frazee Dream Center, Miracle Hill Boys\u2019 Shelter and Neighborhood Focus, a non-profit that supports Hispanic and Latino K-12 students through afterschool and summer programming. She also authored an op-ed in The Greenville News entitled \u201cWhat’s So Un-American About Being Bilingual?\u201d<\/p>\n
