Furman University President Elizabeth Davis and Asian Studies and Politics and International Affairs Professor Kate Kaup are featured in a new guide published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, \u201cPreparing for Tough Conversations: How to Set the Stage for Major Change on Your Campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

The publication includes details about Furman’s efforts to\u00a0create a new vision for the university.<\/p><\/div>\n

According to Lee Gardner, author of the 26-page publication, the report \u201coffers college leaders and aspiring leaders practical advice on how to prepare for tough conversations with stakeholders, communicate effectively, and wrest positive change from all those meetings you can count on attending.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chronicle talked to President Davis about how she led conversations around implementing the university\u2019s new vision, The Furman Advantage, and how she included faculty in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreating an \u2018us against them,\u2019 or \u2018Here\u2019s what we\u2019re doing, and you better come along,\u2019 \u2014 it\u2019s just not going to be successful in the long run,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n

The writer also interviewed professor and former faculty chair Kaup, who said President Davis did a \u201cgood job of soliciting faculty input and involvement at Furman\u201d and was \u201cvery attuned from the beginning to that need.\u201d<\/p>\n
