{"id":8001,"date":"2019-02-11T13:54:30","date_gmt":"2019-02-11T18:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2019\/02\/13\/black-history-month-talk-geoffrey-habron\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T19:34:53","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T00:34:53","slug":"black-history-month-talk-geoffrey-habron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/black-history-month-talk-geoffrey-habron\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month celebration continues with talk by Geoffrey Habron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professors of sustainability science aren\u2019t typically the first people who come to mind when organizers brainstorm for Black History Month presentations, so Geoffrey Habron was pleasantly surprised to be asked if he\u2019d like to be a part of Furman\u2019s 2019 celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student said, \u2018I\u2019m not really sure if there\u2019s a connection between the environment and black folks, but we thought we\u2019d ask you,\u2019\u201d said Habron, who has taught in Furman\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/academics\/earth-and-environmental-sciences\/Pages\/default.aspx\">department of earth and environmental sciences<\/a> since 2017, with a laugh. \u201cIf you were going to have somebody talk about Black History Month, there are other faculty on campus that you\u2019d go to first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as it turns out, there\u2019s a strong connection between the environment and American black history, which Habron will explain on Feb. 12 with his talk, &#8220;Environmentalism and Social Justice,&#8221; scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Patrick Lecture Hall in the Townes Science Center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/academics\/earth-and-environmental-sciences\/Meet-Our-Faculty\/Pages\/Geoffrey-Habron.aspx\">Habron<\/a>\u00a0teaches a class on sustainability and social justice, and among the many topics he plans to explore is the role of discrimination in the decline of the number of African-American farmers in the United States, diet and nutrition, and how environmental issues have impacted and currently impact black communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want everybody to walk away with a better appreciation for the simple things in life and yet how complex they are behind the scenes in terms of recognizing not everybody has the same access to things that we take for granted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is one of multiple events scheduled for February on the Furman campus to celebrate Black History Month.
