Kelly Sue DeConnick, author of Marvel Comics\u2019 \u201cCaptain Marvel,\u201d will speak on the Furman campus Friday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. in John\u2019s Hall, Room 101.<\/p>\n
Her Cultural Life Program talk, \u201cHow to Make People Uncomfortable and Ask Difficult Questions:\u00a0Returning Comics to Their Progressive Roots,\u201d is free and open to the public and is presented by Furman\u2019s Department of Philosophy and the Humanities Development Fund.<\/p>\n
In her presentation, DeConnick will discuss how she uses the medium of comics to question and challenge social norms.<\/p>\n
DeConnick is an American comic book writer, editor and English-language adapter of manga, a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels.<\/p>\n
In addition to Marvel Comics, she has worked for several American comic companies including Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics and DC Comics.<\/p>\n
The movie, \u201cCaptain Marvel,\u201d which opens in theaters on International Women\u2019s Day March 8, is based on DeConnick\u2019s character.<\/p>\n
DeConnick is coauthor of \u201cThe Kloo Horn Cantina Caper,\u201d a short story published as part of the 2017 anthology collection \u201cFrom a Certain Point of View,\u201d released in celebration of the 40th anniversary of \u201cStar Wars.\u201d<\/p>\n
She is also author of \u201cBitch Planet\u201d and \u201cPretty Deadly,\u201d both published by Image Comics. She is currently developing TV for Legendary Studios and writing \u201cAquaman\u201d for DC Comics.<\/p>\n
