The second annual branding and package design competition hosted by the Furman Department of Art and Atlanta-based Miami Ad School @ Portfolio Center saw a three-fold increase from the previous year\u2019s design throw-down, and solid representation from multiple disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37931\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37931\" class=\"wp-image-37931 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/nud-pasta-salad-sleep-when-youre-dead-cropped-1140.jpg\" alt=\"design competition\" width=\"450\" height=\"316\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/316;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The team responsible for grab-n-go pasta salad received the Platinum Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After a standing room-only kick-off Cultural Life Program talk by former Coca-Cola brand strategist and current cofounder of Kids II David Butler on Jan. 25, the design challenge was unveiled \u2014 to reimagine bacon, or butter, or pasta, or the coffee pod, all while keeping central to the design, sustainability and the online experience related to the brand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the ensuing hours, teams made up of four students and a Miami Ad School @ Portfolio Center representative flew into action in various \u201cwar rooms\u201d in the Roe<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37932\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37932\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37932 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sleep-when-youre-dead-piper-bacon-450.jpg\" alt=\"design competition\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piper Bacon won the Innovation Award. (photo credit: Sophie Harris &#8217;19)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Art Building and went to work brainstorming, ferreting out supplies, drafting, c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reating, and finally crafting prototypes for reimagined foods. (There were no\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">takers for the coffee pod challenge.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sleep-deprived and fueled by Krispy Kremes, pizza and energy drinks, students pushed forward and produced agency-worthy mock-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Winning best in show was the team responsible for N\u00dcD (pronounced \u201cnood\u201d\u2014a fully cooked pasta salad designed and packaged for on-the-go millennials. The Innovation Award went to female-targeted Piper Bacon (named for one of the team members) with tag line \u201cLive Life Grease Free\u201d and whose fold-out package provided a fat-trapping, microwave cooking surface. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Art Department Chair Ross McClain says students come away with so much even if they don\u2019t score a trophy. He says the process unfolds in an organic way. From strategizing to midnight runs to Wal-Mart for reconnaissance and supply-gathering missions, students \u201cfigure it out\u201d and \u201clearn what they\u2019re made of,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37933\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37933\" class=\"wp-image-37933 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sleep-when-youre-dead-budder-450.jpg\" alt=\"design competition\" width=\"245\" height=\"368\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 245px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 245\/368;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Team &#8220;budder&#8221; won a special Judge&#8217;s Award.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Business major Charles Jackson &#8217;19, whose group took on the bacon challenge, said he valued the chance to solve a problem among disparate personalities and majors because everybody brings their own \u201cpersonal aesthetic\u201d to the table. \u201cWe were able to put ideas into this intangible concept and literally fabricate it into life and bring about an actual, tangible object,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Senior communication studies major Mira Brody of Ocean Ridge Florida, part of team \u201cbudder,\u201d also appreciates what differing perspectives brings to problem-solving. \u201cI learned to trust the design process and the skills of my team. You might think your project is going in one direction in your head, but it ends <\/span>up going in a totally different direction that works better than you could have thought on your own,\u201d said Brody.<\/p>\n<p>For studio art major Abby McElmurray &#8217;20 of North Augusta, South Carolina, the competition was &#8220;the perfect demonstration of the possible pressures of design in the real world. It also forces participants to push their ideas and unlock their creative abilities in a group setting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Studio art alumna Rowan Griscom \u201917 lent her expertise as a <a href=\"https:\/\/portfoliocenter.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miami Ad School @ Portfolio Center<\/a> student. Team leader for N\u00dcD, Griscom said, \u201cMy team came prepared to tackle the prompt and went for it. They ideated well and handled each hurdle of the design process with ease.
