The vigil is organized by Furman’s Jewish Student Association and Office of Spiritual Life.

“We join the country in mourning the loss of life and in the condemnation of such hate and violence,” said Furman President Elizabeth Davis. “Sadly, this incident is not isolated. We are living in difficult times when it is easy and unfortunately acceptable to strike out against groups of people who may be different, or who may hold different political or religious beliefs. Our country cannot withstand such divisiveness and tribalism.

“At Furman, we want to be a place where students live and learn with others who are different. Only when we see each other as individuals rather than as ‘types’ can we truly be an inclusive community. We want every student, faculty and staff member to feel they are welcome and safe at Furman, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.”

For more information, contact the Office of Spiritual Life at 864-294-2133 and susan.bennett@furman.edu.

A memorial vigil honoring those who lost their lives in the tragic shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh will take place on the Furman University campus Thursday, Nov.
