Thomas has received the 2019 Divergent Award for Excellence in 21st Century Literacies for his collection of essays \u201cCritical Media Literacy and Fake News in Post-Truth America\u201d co-edited by Christian Z. Goering at the University of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35583\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35583\" class=\"wp-image-35583 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/paul-thomas-book-cover-cml.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 223px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 223\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The essay collection has received the 2019 Divergent Award for Excellence in 21st Century Literacies.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Published by Brill\/Sense in 2018, the book is one of two selected for recognition this year from a \u201crecord number of book nominees,\u201d according to the award selection committee at the Initiative for 21st Century Literacies Research.<\/p>\n<p>About the volume, the publishers at Brill\/Sense say, \u201c\u2026The essays collected here are confrontations of post-truth, fake news, mainstream media, and traditional approaches to formal schooling. But there are no simple answers or quick fixes. Critical media literacy, we argue here, may well be the only thing between a free people and their freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas and Goering will be recognized for their work during the 21st Century Literacies Lecture Series scheduled for early 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Furman faculty in 2002, Thomas taught high school English in rural South Carolina. He earned his undergraduate degree and advanced degrees in education from the University of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>He is a former column co-editor for the English Journal, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of English, and series editor for \u201cCritical Literacy Teaching Series: Challenging Authors and Genres\u201d (Brill\/Sense Publishers), for which he authored the first volume \u2013\u201cChallenging Genres: Comics and Graphic Novels\u201d in 2010 and co-edited a volume on James Baldwin in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>He has published books about Barbara Kingsolver, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin and Haruki Murakami; and his recent books include \u201cTrumplandia: Unmasking Post-Truth America\u201d (Garn, 2017), \u201cDe-Testing and De-Grading Schools\u201d (Peter Lang USA, 2016), \u201cPedagogies of Kindness and Respect: On the Lives and Education of Children\u201d (Peter Lang USA, 2015) and \u201cBeware the Roadbuilders\u201d (Garn, 2015).<\/p>\n<p>He was the 2013 recipient of the George Orwell Award presented by National Council of Teachers of English, and has written commentaries for the Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian, Education Week, The State and The Greenville News.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.initiativefor21research.org\/\">www.initiativefor21research.org<\/a>.
