{"id":7688,"date":"2018-09-13T15:41:01","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T19:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/14\/nomination-process-opens-for-the-2018-jim-smart-award\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T18:51:23","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T23:51:23","slug":"nomination-process-opens-for-the-2018-jim-smart-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/nomination-process-opens-for-the-2018-jim-smart-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Nomination process opens for the 2018 Jim Smart Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2093\" class=\"yiv5328338411MsoNormal\">The Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection has opened the nomination process for the 2018\u00a0James H. \u201cJim\u201d Smart Award for Fostering Vocational Exploration &amp; Reflection.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2117\" class=\"yiv5328338411MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2116\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/academics\/center-for-vocational-reflection\/Support-for-Faculty-and-Staff\/Pages\/James-H.-Smart-Award.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Jim Smart Award<\/a> is designed to encourage vocational exploration and reflection by Furman students through the recognition of faculty and staff who exemplify this work in their teaching, advising, mentoring, service, public engagement and\/or other aspects of their roles at the university.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2120\" class=\"yiv5328338411MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2119\">This award celebrates the memory of Jim Smart, a longtime history professor at Furman, who was known for his passion for teaching and learning, his dedication to student development, and the importance he placed on students\u2019 exploration of values and purposeful living, especially in the context of Furman University as a liberal arts college that focuses on a holistic approach to education. This award is made possible by a gift from Jim\u2019s wife, Bonnie Smart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2123\" class=\"yiv5328338411MsoNormal\">Last year, professor of Spanish and English department chair David Bost, the\u00a0Carey Shepard Crantford Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures,\u00a0<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1536870864724_2122\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.furman.edu\/2018\/01\/03\/modern-languages-professor-bost-receives-2017-jim-smart-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received the award<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Nominations are being accepted for qualified candidates for this year\u2019s award until Oct. 1 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/academics\/center-for-vocational-reflection\/Support-for-Faculty-and-Staff\/Pages\/James-Smart-Award-Nomination-Form.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be submitted online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More information can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/academics\/center-for-vocational-reflection\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cothran Center website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection has opened the nomination process for the 2018\u00a0James H. \u201cJim\u201d Smart Award for Fostering Vocational Exploration &amp; Reflection.
