{"id":7661,"date":"2018-10-29T20:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T00:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2018\/10\/29\/first-generation\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:04:27","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:04:27","slug":"first-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/first-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Help celebrate First-Gen First Friday program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the first Friday of each month this fall, Furman is asking faculty and staff to wear T-shirts in support of first-generation students. <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.furman.edu\/studentlife\/inclusive-communities\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Inclusive Communities<\/a> is providing newly designed shirts to both faculty and staff who are first-generation college graduates (commonly defined as neither parent having earned a four-year degree) as well as faculty and staff who are not first-generation but want to show their support.<\/p>\n<p>The next T-shirt distribution will take place Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Trone Student Center atrium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first semester is critical to the retention of all our incoming students,\u201d said Neil Jamerson, assistant vice president for student development. \u201cWe hope these T-shirts will signal to our first-generation students that others like them have been successful in college and provide encouragement during their time of transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, Furman enrolled 101 students who are attempting to become the first in their immediate family to graduate with a baccalaureate degree,<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact Jamerson at 864-294-3104 and <a href=\"mailto:neil.jamerson@furman.edu\">neil.jamerson@furman.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the first Friday of each month this fall, Furman is asking faculty and staff to wear T-shirts in support of first-generation students.
