Wise, an expert on child health policy, will deliver a free public lecture on \u201cChildren in Crisis: Wars and Poverty\u201d Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in Furman University\u2019s McEachern Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture, sponsored by the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and supported by the J. Kelly Sisk Fund, will focus on Wise\u2019s research on children\u2019s health policies and socioeconomics in Guatemala. He will discuss poverty and other crises in the developing world, including the after-effects of the civil war in Guatemala that ended in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Wise is the Richard Behrman Professor of Child Health and Society, Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is director of the Center for Policy, Outcomes and Prevention and a core faculty member of the Centers for Health Policy and Primary Care Outcomes Research at Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>He currently serves on the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society, and formerly served as chair of the steering committee of the National Institutes of Health Global Network for Women and Children\u2019s Health Research.<\/p>\n<p>He earned his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Cornell University and a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University\u2019s School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact Bruce Clemens in the Department of Business and Accounting at Furman at (864) 294-3649.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 14, 2012<br \/>\nby Erikah Haavie, Contributing Writer<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University professor and pediatrician Paul H.
