{"id":7635,"date":"2018-08-22T13:15:22","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T13:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2018\/08\/31\/immigration\/"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:15:14","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T19:15:14","slug":"immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/immigration\/","title":{"rendered":"Three-part lecture series to examine immigration issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Riley Institute<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Furman University will open their StraightTalk Series with \u201cImmigration Enforcement in a Post-9\/11 America\u201d Thursday, Aug. 30, 6:30-8 p.m., in Shaw Hall of the Melvin and Dollie Younts Conference Center on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion is the first in a three-part series titled \u201cWho Gets to be American? Immigration and the Fight for America\u2019s Future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The series continues Thursday, Sept. 6 with \u201cChasing the American Dream: The Economics of Immigration,\u201d and Thursday, Sept. 13 with \u201cThe Changing Face of America: Impact on the 2018 Election and Beyond,\u201d both at 6:30-8 p.m. in Shaw Hall of the Melvin and Dollie Younts Conference Center. The cost for all three sessions is $35 ($25 for OLLI members) or $15 per session. Registration is required.<\/p>\n<p>Session one, \u201cImmigration Enforcement in a Post-9\/11 America,\u201d features keynote speaker and former counsel for the Department of Homeland Security Stephen Legomsky. An authority on immigration law and policy, Legomsky has served as adviser to both Democratic and Republican administrations, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and several foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>Following Legomsky\u2019s remarks, the Hon.
