Furman held a baccalaureate service for the graduating seniors earlier Saturday.<\/p><\/div>\n

Furman University awarded 623 undergraduate and master\u2019s degrees and presented its top academic honors during graduation exercises Saturday, May 5 in Paladin Stadium.<\/p>\n

The Scholarship Cup, given to the outstanding scholars of the senior class, was awarded to Nikita Girish Deshpande, a neuroscience major from Simpsonville, and Carol Ann Lewis, a mathematics major from Greer.<\/p>\n

The Donaldson-Watkins and the Bradshaw-Feaster Medals for General Excellence are awarded each year by the faculty to outstanding senior graduates. Deshpande received the Donaldson-Watkins Medal, while the Bradshaw-Feaster Medal was awarded to Noah Carroll Zimmermann, a philosophy and politics and international affairs major from Camden.<\/p>\n

The university also presented the Alester G. Furman, Jr., and Janie Earle Furman awards for meritorious teaching and advising.<\/p>\n

The graduates and their families spent the day on campus.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The teaching awards went to William A. Ranson, professor of earth and environmental sciences, and Lynne P. Shackelford, professor of English.<\/p>\n

The advising awards were presented to Erin R. Hahn, associate professor of psychology, and Derek J. Parsons, professor of music.<\/p>\n

The Meritorious Award for Diversity and Inclusion was presented to Allyson Brown, director of diversity and transfer recruitment, and Scott Salzman, associate librarian.<\/p>\n

Frances Ligler, a 1972 Furman graduate and the Lampe Distinguished Professor in the UNC\/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, served as commencement speaker<\/strong><\/a>. She was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree.<\/p>\n

The student speaker was graduate Lexie Harvey<\/strong><\/a>, a politics and international affairs major from Brentwood, Tennessee.<\/p>\n
