Even on top of classroom requirements, advising, grading, serving on committees and attending meetings, professors from all disciplines are collaborating with students, delving deep into scientific and behavioral questions, and fostering creativity\u2014all in the name of scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The place where colleagues can collectively showcase this work is the Faculty Scholarship Reception. Furman University Libraries and the Office of the Provost hosted Furman\u2019s second annual reception Feb. 23 to recognize and celebrate the scholarly publications and creative works of Furman\u2019s faculty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35723\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35723\" class=\"wp-image-35723 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/Faculty-Scholarship-Greg-Springsteen-1140.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"235\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 353px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 353\/235;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Chemistry professor Greg Springsteen attempted to stay within the four-minute talk window.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Held in Blackwell Atrium of the James B. Duke Library, the reception highlighted 137 examples of scholarship by 70 faculty members representing 22 academic departments. There were also six faculty members who displayed sabbatical projects.<\/p>\n<p>About 100 guests, including faculty, staff, senior administration and Board of Trustees members, mingled with scholars, listened to remarks from a select few in \u201cspeed talks\u201d and looked through the many displays.<\/p>\n<p>Some professors stepped up to the challenge of distilling their research or creative work to four-minute presentations. Faculty scholarship directly affects every student on campus, either through classroom teaching or through faculty-student research projects,\u201d said Furman Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs George Shields.<\/p>\n<p>So, faculty scholarship is only part of the story at receptions like these. Student\/professor collaborations and relationships are fostered, and students become newfound colleagues.
