{"id":7065,"date":"2017-11-21T15:05:38","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T20:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/27\/show-and-tell\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:19:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:19:59","slug":"show-and-tell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/show-and-tell\/","title":{"rendered":"Show and tell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In their quest to learn how to sell things, marketing students sometimes forget the biggest sale they\u2019ll ever make: themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is the internet age presents more opportunities than ever before to do just that. The bad news is it\u2019s not an intuitive ability, even for a generation that has never known a world without a screen at its fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Buttell \u201983 has been running <a href=\"http:\/\/lakeeffectcreative.com\/\">Lake Effect Creative<\/a>, her content creation and consulting company, since 1999, and she\u2019s seen a lot of things change in the marketing world. One thing that hasn\u2019t, however, is a skill as old as human language itself but as important as ever\u2013storytelling.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35055\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/readymag.com\/u60623097\/661974\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35055\" class=\"wp-image-35055 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/Young-Professionals-Guide-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/148;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A digital magazine created by Amy Buttell.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI call it a storytelling lab because that\u2019s what marketing is all about,\u201d Buttell said of the Integrated Marketing Communications class she teaches at Furman. \u201cAnd in my opinion, the best way to learn how to tell stories is to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that end, students are required to create a digital magazine, write blogs and build LinkedIn profiles, and when they\u2019re finished they have valuable examples of their ability to use cutting-edge technology as well as new resumes on which to put them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had to create a narrative in our LinkedIn bio that wasn\u2019t just \u2018I\u2019m looking for this\u2019 but demonstrated a time when we used our strengths in the field that we want to get into,\u201d said Chad Boltz \u201918 who took the course in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>When potential employers visit Boltz\u2019s LinkedIn page now, they learn how, as an intern in University Communications, he managed Furman&#8217;s social media accounts, showcasing his ability to adjust on the fly and take responsibility. Buttell thinks the LinkedIn project is the most difficult for her students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelling your own story is the hardest thing to do,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd if it\u2019s not specific, I don\u2019t care about it. Don\u2019t tell me you\u2019re leader\u2013describe in your profile what you\u2019ve done. It\u2019s much more powerful for me to draw a conclusion about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35053\" style=\"width: 416px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35053\" class=\"wp-image-35053 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/biz-lab-photo-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"224\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 406px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 406\/224;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Galloway, creative director and mobile music manager, and Jay Spivey, publisher of FeteGreenville, work with students in Furman&#8217;s Joe and Diana Hurley Finance and Business Analytics Lab.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To drive the point home, Buttell enlists the expertise of\u00a0Greenville digital content agency <a href=\"https:\/\/enveritasgroup.com\/\">EnVeritas Group<\/a>, and Jay Spivey, publisher of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/fetegreenville.com\">F\u00eate<\/a>&#8221; Greenville<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fetegreenville.com\/\">\u00a0<\/a>magazine. &#8220;F\u00eate&#8221; was the only online flip magazine in South Carolina when it launched eight years ago, and Spivey helps the students create a similar-looking product of their own using <a href=\"https:\/\/readymag.com\/\">Readymag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy format teaches students a very simple way to produce something online that looks great on a phone,\u201d Spivey said. \u201cWhen they land their first job, they\u2019ll know how to make a communications tool for their company that most businesses don&#8217;t already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ty Randell \u201917 was part of a team that collaborated to create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/readymag.com\/u92864873\/705631\/\">Sustainability at Furman<\/a>,\u201d and the project helped him land his job as North American sales manager for Finnish company Confidex Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring my interview I talked about the work I had done, and the digital magazine came up. I told them how the class taught me how to market myself and also promote Furman, and they thought that was really interesting,\u201d Randell, a business major from Lake City, Florida, said. \u201cThis class helped me get this job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EnVeritas marketing associate Shawn Daughhetee came to campus to aid students as they wrote blogs she then posted for use by professional marketers. \u201cI wanted something from their unique perspective as business students in that age group,\u201d she says. \u201cThey\u2019d never written a blog specifically for a website. Most of their work had been academic or papers, so it\u2019s a different style. Getting them to loosen up was a little challenging, but having a blog they can link to and show their work is really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, Buttell hopes, it&#8217;s a step toward a successful career.
