A distant relative of famed physicist Albert Einstein, he practiced internal and pulmonary medicine for decades in Bakersfield, Calif., and would become best known as a central figure in a coordinated effort to develop a vaccine designed to prevent valley fever, one of the great medical scourges of the American Southwest.
