The American History Book Club and Forum, Upcountry History Museum and Furman University will host The New York Times<\/em> columnist Maureen Dowd Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at The Poinsett Club in downtown Greenville.<\/p>\n

Dowd will be joined by Carl Hulse, chief Washington correspondent for The New York Times<\/em>, for a talk and conversation on \u201cHumor and History: Satire\u2019s Role in Democracy.\u201d The event is open to the public but reservations are required.<\/p>\n

The cost for attending is $50 per person with the opportunity to include a donation to the Furman University Huff Scholars Fund, which supports Furman student internships and research and promotes history literacy in grades K-12.<\/p>\n

The New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd<\/p><\/div>\n

Dowd, the winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary and author of two New York Times<\/em> best-sellers, became an op-ed columnist for The New York Times<\/em> in 1995. She joined the paper in 1983 as a metropolitan correspondent and then moved to the Washington bureau in 1986 to cover politics.<\/p>\n

Dowd has covered seven presidential campaigns for the Times<\/em>, served as the White House correspondent, and written \u201cOn Washington,\u201d a column for The New York Times Magazine<\/em>. Her first book, Bushworld<\/em>, covered the presidency and personality of George W. Bush and quickly climbed the best-seller list. Her second book, Are Men Necessary? When Sexes Collide<\/em>, was released in 2005. Her most recent book, The Year of Voting Dangerously: The Derangement of American Politics<\/em>, looks at one of the most contentious presidential races in U.S. history.<\/p>\n

In addition to The New York Times<\/em>, Dowd has written for GQ<\/em>, Vanity Fair<\/em>, Rolling Stone<\/em>, The New Republic<\/em>, Mademoiselle<\/em>, Sports Illustrated<\/em> and others.<\/p>\n

Carl Hulse is a congressional correspondent for The New York Times<\/em>, providing regular coverage on the legislative and political activities of both the House and Senate. He joined the newspaper in 1986 and served as the Washington bureau chief for the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, an assortment of community newspapers owned by the company and centered in the Southeast.<\/p>\n
