{"id":6915,"date":"2017-09-22T18:32:18","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T22:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2017\/09\/27\/chris-and-andrea-borch-give-1-million-to-furman-running-program\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T19:57:17","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T00:57:17","slug":"chris-and-andrea-borch-give-1-million-to-furman-running-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/chris-and-andrea-borch-give-1-million-to-furman-running-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Chris and Andrea Borch give $1 million to Furman running program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman University graduate Chris Borch \u201978 and his wife, Andrea, have given more than $4 million over the past decade to support the university\u2019s track and cross-country program.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Borchs have pledged another $1 million to the program, a portion of which will go toward the construction of a new track house at the Irwin Belk Complex for Track and Field.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the \u201cBlue Shoes Track House,\u201d which will provide shelter for the runners during inclement weather and contain a meeting room, lockers and restroom facilities, is scheduled to begin this fall.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34267\" style=\"width: 461px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34267\" class=\"wp-image-34267 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/track-shack-dedication-borch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"365\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 451px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 451\/365;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Chris Borch (left) was at Furman on Sept. 8 to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the Blue Shoes Track House.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of the $1 million gift will also support the track and cross-country operating budget, the scholarship and coaching endowment, and Furman Elite, a post-collegiate training program for Olympic hopefuls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is no secret that the remarkable success of Furman\u2019s running program has coincided with the financial generosity of Chris and Andrea,\u201d said Furman Athletics Director Mike Buddie.\u00a0 \u201cAnd since much of their support has gone toward the university\u2019s endowment, the value of those gifts has appreciated significantly over the years. We are humbled by the level of trust the Borchs have in our running program, and we are deeply grateful for their continued support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Borch, a former cross-country runner at Furman, is founder and CEO of Micro-Mechanics, a high-tech manufacturing company with five plants around the world. He and his wife established the \u201cBlue Shoes\u201d scholarship fund in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Borch said that on his first day of cross-country practice as a Furman student, coach Bill Keesling gave everyone on the team a pair of blue Onitsuka Tiger running shoes.\u00a0 \u201cThat small gift,\u201d he said, \u201csignaled the beginning of four wonderful years. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Under the guidance of two-time Olympian and head coach Robert Gary, the Furman men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross-country programs have each claimed the last four Southern Conference titles, and the cross-country and track and field programs have earned a combined nine All-American citations over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>The Paladin men, who finished 13th at the 2015 NCAA Cross-Country Championships, are ranked 12th nationally in the latest USTFCCCA national poll and are currently the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region.\u00a0 The Paladin women are ranked 32nd in the USTFCCCA national poll.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a great pleasure working with Chris, whose commitment to the program really began in 2005,\u201d said Gary, who became Furman\u2019s head track and cross-country coach in 2012. \u201cIt takes a special kind of stakeholder to get behind an endeavor long before it\u2019s built, and Chris and Andrea have displayed both the vision and generosity to take the program to a higher level. The Blue Shoes Track House was a focus once scholarships, operations and coaching positions were addressed.
