John Milby, who joined the Furman University police department in 2015, has been named chief of police.<\/p>\n
Milby was promoted to assistant director of police in 2016 and has served as acting police chief since May. He will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive safety and prevention program to support Furman\u2019s mission in the areas of law enforcement, physical security, and crime prevention and awareness.<\/p>\n
\u201cJohn is familiar with the university and he understands the role the department must play in making Furman\u2019s campus among the safest in the nation,\u201d said Mary Lou Merkt, Furman\u2019s vice president for finance and administration. \u201cHe also understands the importance of building relationships with both the students and the surrounding community. We welcome him in this new role.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before joining Furman, Milby served 25 years as a member of the Douglas County Nevada Sheriff\u2019s Office, where he held the positions of commander of the investigation division, jail division commander, sergeant, investigator and deputy sheriff.<\/p>\n
In 2006, Milby was awarded the Sheriff\u2019s Citation for Merit\/Douglas County Sheriff\u2019s Office Supervisor of the Year. In 2015, he received the Outstanding Thesis Award from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Center for Homeland Defense and Security.<\/p>\n
An adjunct professor for the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston (West Virginia), Milby holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from American Public University and a master\u2019s degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He also holds a Certificate of Criminal Justice Education from the FBI National Academy and a Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.<\/p>\n
Milby replaces Tom Saccenti, who was named police chief at the University of West Georgia in August.<\/p>\n
