Col. Kenneth Dwyer and his U.S.-Afghan unit found themselves outnumbered during a 2006 ambush in Afghanistan. Dwyer lost a hand and an eye as a result of the firefight, but not his life. Extensive injuries didn&#8217;t stop the Green Beret from climbing the ranks of the Special Forces, nor did they keep him from playing catch with his son. A 1998 Furman health sciences graduate, Dwyer told his story to Dash Coleman of the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/savannahnow.com\/news\/2017-09-02\/hunter-army-airfield-commander-injured-green-beret-inspires-action\">Savannah Morning News<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Now garrison commander for Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga., Dwyer said, &#8220;The hardest part [of my recovery] was convincing everybody around me that I could do whatever I wanted to as long as I was creative enough and dedicated enough to figure it out.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lt.
