GREENVILLE, S.C.\u2014Sixty-six Furman University students have been elected to the school\u2019s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation\u2019s oldest and most prestigious academic society.<\/p>\n

The newest members were inducted during a special initiation ceremony and dinner on campus in late March.<\/p>\n

The president of Furman\u2019s Phi Beta Kappa chapter is Dr. Liz Bouzarth, associate professor of mathematics.\u00a0 The PBK secretary is Patricia Sasser, director of the Maxwell Music Library at Furman.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1776 during the American Revolution, Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters induct the most outstanding students at America\u2019s leading colleges and universities, and only about 10 percent of the nation’s institutions of higher education have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.<\/p>\n

George Shields, Furman’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, was inducted into Furman’s chapter as a honorary member.<\/p>\n
