{"id":6570,"date":"2017-03-21T20:12:35","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T00:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/31\/paul-thomas-authors-new-book-trumplandia\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:39:09","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:39:09","slug":"paul-thomas-authors-new-book-trumplandia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/paul-thomas-authors-new-book-trumplandia\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Thomas authors new book, &#8220;Trumplandia&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Furman Education Professor Paul Thomas has published a new book, <em>Trumplandia: Unmasking Post-Truth America<\/em> (Garn Press).<\/p>\n<p>Using a series of essays, <em>Trumplandia<\/em> examines how a reality TV star as president represents post-truth America as a failed democracy and as a country still wrangling with deep-seated racism, classism, sexism, and xenophobia. Thomas highlights the work of literary greats James Baldwin and Langston Hughes as a paradox to modern-day claims of \u201cMake America Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about Trump. It\u2019s about us,\u201d said Thomas. \u201cIt\u2019s about the American character, who we claim to be and who we really are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recurring theme throughout the book is an implicit question: How can Americans resist <em>Trumplandia<\/em> and truly become a democracy?<\/p>\n<p>Before joining the Furman faculty in 2002, Thomas taught high school English in rural South Carolina. He earned undergraduate, master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in education from the University of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>He is a column co-editor for the <em>English Journal<\/em>, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of English, and series editor for <em>Critical Literacy Teaching Series: Challenging Authors and Genres<\/em> (Sense Publishers), in which he authored the first volume\u2014<em>Challenging Genres: Comics and Graphic Novels<\/em> in 2010 and co-edited a volume on James Baldwin in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>He has published books on Barbara Kingsolver, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Haruki Murakami; and his recent books include <em>De-Testing and De-Grading Schools<\/em> (Peter Lang USA, 2016), <em>Pedagogies of Kindness and Respect: On the Lives and Education of Children<\/em> (Peter Lang USA, 2015), and <em>Beware the Roadbuilders<\/em> (Garn, 2015).<\/p>\n<p>He was the 2013 recipient of the George Orwell Award presented by National Council of Teachers of English, and has written commentaries for the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>The Guardian<\/em>, <em>Education Week<\/em>, <em>The State<\/em>, and <em>The Greenville News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Read Thomas\u2019 blog at <a href=\"https:\/\/radicalscholarship.wordpress.com\/\">https:\/\/radicalscholarship.wordpress.com\/<\/a>. <em>Trumplandia<\/em> is available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Trumplandia-Unmasking-Post-Truth-P-Thomas\/dp\/1942146558\/\">Amazon<\/a>.
