{"id":6554,"date":"2017-03-27T13:12:54","date_gmt":"2017-03-27T17:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/27\/plastic-china\/"},"modified":"2022-11-06T20:38:52","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T01:38:52","slug":"plastic-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/plastic-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastic China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese independent documentary director Wang Jiuliang will discuss his new film, <em>Plastic China<\/em>, April 4 at Patrick Lecture Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The film, first screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January, tells the story of an unschooled 11-year-old girl whose family works and lives in a typical plastic waste household-recycling workshop. The new film has caused quite a controversy in China, and his discussion of it has been censored, though the film has still obtained tens of thousands of page views.<\/p>\n<p>The event, part of Furman\u2019s Cultural Life Program, will include a brief introduction by Asian Studies Assistant Professor Tami Blumenfield, the 82-minute film screening, and a question-and-answer session with Director Wang after the film. The event runs from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Jiuliang first gained international attention with his film, \u201cBeijing Besieged by Waste,\u201d which traveled the international film festival circuit and created changes to the landfill policies in the area surrounding China\u2019s capital.
