With the summer halfway mark upon us, the start of school is on the horizon.<\/p>\n
And members of the Furman community have joined with the United Way of Greenville County to help some economically disadvantaged students get prepared to meet the new school year.<\/p>\n
Last year, donations from university faculty and staff provided needed school supplies \u2013 paper, pens, pencils and binders \u2013 to more than 100 elementary and middle school students through the United Way\u2019s School Tools Program.<\/p>\n
Community relations director Chandra Dillard is coordinating this year\u2019s drive with student Logan Patrick.\u00a0 The duo are hoping to crest the 2011 total, which was a record.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a great opportunity for departments and offices to team up and support local Greenville students,\u201d says Dillard.\u00a0 \u201cThe cost to fill one bag is approximately $10. And if shopping is not your favorite pastime, cash donations are welcomed, and we will do the shopping for you.<\/p>\n
Last year, the United Way distributed school tools backpacks to more than 3,700 Greenville County students with about 76 companies and organizations pitching in to collect supplies.<\/p>\n
Those wishing to participate should contact Dillard at 864 294-2503. She will have the shopping bags and supply list delivered to you.\u00a0 The bags, which can be picked up by community relations, are due by August 6.\u00a0 Donations, too, are being accepted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
