Thompson Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A reception and talk with the artist is set for Friday, March 24, at 6 p.m. in the gallery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30124\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30124\" class=\"wp-image-30124 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.furman.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/218\/2022\/08\/anna-kell-escape-from-cultivation-400-wide.jpg\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 215px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 215\/300;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30124\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A piece from Kell&#8217;s &#8220;Escape From Cultivation&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Her exhibition, <em>Escape from Cultivation<\/em>, is free and open to the public and is presented by the Furman University Department of Art.<\/p>\n<p>Kell\u2019s personal artwork is motivated by a desire to understand cultural attitudes toward nature and the environment, which she attempts to highlight through the appropriation and critique of mass-produced representations of idealized nature and the floral decorations imprinted on the many domestic artifacts that she uses.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Kell says, \u201cThe abundance of idealized nature imagery in our homes and on our bodies\u2014prolific and sensual florals, hunting camouflage in an oak leaf motif, eye-poppingly gorgeous tropicalia\u2014is misleading and obscures the decreasing biodiversity of the natural environments beyond our doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This can be seen in her recent series of paintings, inspired by the herbarium and other botanical conventions, <em>Escape from Cultivation<\/em>.\u00a0Alongside the paintings, Kell will also show a sculptural installation piece composed of cast-off furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Kell holds a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Art &amp; Art History, University of Florida, and a bachelor\u2019s degree in art from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the exhibition, contact the Furman University Department of Art, 864-294-2995.
